How are Flower Essences used?

Flower Essence available in stores are ususally sold as stock bottles, like the  Bach Flower Essences, incl. the well known Rescue Remedy. They can be taken directly from the stock bottle but are used more economically – and sometimes more effectively – in diluted form.

Here are  various ways essences can be used:

  • Directly from the stock bottle: put a couple of drops directly on or under the tongue. This is  best for single or short term use and for emergency situations. If you just received  bad news, are nervous about an upcoming interview or feel stressed for any other reason,  a few drops of Rescue Remedy directly on the tongue are  best.  –  This kind of use can be applied  applies to any essence, not just to Rescue Remedy.
  • In a glass of water:  Put 3-4 drops of each essence into a glass of water and sip throughout the day.  For example, if you find yourself distracted and unable to  focus, a couple of drops of Clematis essence in a glass of water  taken through out the day – preferably not on a full stomach! – may be helpful. If you are in a stressful short-term situation, you might put  5 drops Rescue Remedy in a glass of water and drink one or more glasses per day.
  • In a dosage bottle:  This is the most common way of using essences. Fill a one-ounce (30 ml) dropper bottle 2/3 with water and 1/3 with a preserving agent like food grade vegetable glycerine, brandy or cider vinaigre, according to your  preference and sensitivity. Add 3 drops of each essence you select. You can use just one essence or combine several. Take 4-5 drops 3-4 times a day until the bottle is finished or the issue you  are treating has been dealt with.
  • Topical use:  For insect bites, burns or sprains, topical application of Rescue Remedy or another appropriate essence can work wonders. The essence  is best taken directly from the stock bottle or added to  a neutral cream. For more advanced use, body maps related to each essence  are available. Some people use essence on acupuncture points.  -When someone has had an accident and cannot swallow, Rescue Remedy can be applied to the temples or pulse.
  • Spray bottle: Essences can also be misted around the body or used as room spray. For people with environmental or electromagnetic sensitivities, misting the essences around the body has shown to be very helpful. The appropriate essence can be prepared like a dosage bottle and used as a spray.  This method can also be helpful in case of animals or children who cannot or may refuse to take an essence internally.  Spray the room or sleeping area with the essence, as often as needed. – The use as room spray can also be beneficial to prepare a  room for a meeting, in order to enhance co-operation and listening, or to literally clear the air after an argument.
  • Use in baths: About 10 drops from the stock bottle  added to a bath is  another method of application.

Who can take essences?

Anyone, from cradle to grave. Flower Essences work well with infants, through all ages right into hospice and palliative care. For children greater dilutions are advisable. Animals respond well to essences, and even plants can benefit.

Since essences are a very dilute form of using plants  and have no direct  biochemical action, they do not interfere with medication,  supplements, herbs and homeopathic remedies.

Precise dosage is not crucial. Whether you take 4 or 5 drops, 2 times or 4 times a day is a matter of preference and individual sensitivity.  Because of the absence of direct biochemical action, there can be no overdose in the usual sense of the term. For the same reason,  allergic reactions are not an issue. I have seen a headache induced through a cup of coffee  by someone with coffee intolerance fade away within an hour after taking a few drops of Coffee Flower Essence  in a glass of water as described above.
