Cats arrive at the house

In November 2015, M., a client of mine told me that two feral cats had come to her home looking for help. They were about 4 months old and it was hard to know where they had come from or what they had been through. They looked like skin and bone, haggard, with a shell-shcocked look in their eyes.

M decided she would offer them food and shelter for a while and then hopefully be able to give them up for adoption when they were ready.

One of the two cats seemed to be particularly difficult. He would not let M. come anyway near him, let alone touch him. She wanted to get both of them sociable enough so they could be adopted and asked me if flower essences could help. M. had had two dogs in the past who had responded well to essences so I felt it was worth trying.

The “problem cat” – later named Gray – was not vicious but extremely shy. He was afraid of noises, of quick moves; when M. made up their food she would have to hold her breath because even her breathing would make him run off.

Obviously there was no way she could give him the drops directly. She was not sure if he drank water because she had to keep the water outside since the cats were not coming into the house. Thus, adding the essences to the drinking water as is common when using them for animals, offered no certainty either. So, we decided M. would try and spray the essences on their sleeping quarters, the are near the food and other places they were likely to hang out.

Flower Essence Spray

Flower Essence Spray

Using essences as a room spray  is one of the many methods how essences can be used. I had seen some good results with it but is not the main method I use.

Essence blend for shock and trauma

In the first blend I decided to use: Aspen, Rock Rose, and Cherry Plum for various states of terror of known and unknown origin for for extreme stress. Star of Bethlehem and Arnica for physical and emotional shock, Red Clover for fear of feeling trapped. Star of Bethlehem, Rock Rose and Cherry Plum are key ingredients in Dr. Bach’s emergency formula called Rescue Remedy.

Then I selected some essence for his distrust of people and fear of contact, in particular Violet and Baby Blue Eyes. I also added Nootka Rose, an essence from a Canadian west coast plant which positively affects all of the acupuncture meridians and helps when one has experienced trauma or abuse.

This essence blend was used for several weeks.

To our relief and my amazement ( I never cease to be amazed about these changes, particularly when animals are involved and when essences are “only” used as a room spray , Gray improved visibly. He was less afraid of noises and moves, and even dared to come into the house, At the beginning he would stay a couple of feet away from M which would have been unthinkable a few weeks prior. The shell shocked look was gone, although half the time he still looked wary as if asking, What is going to happen next?

M felt though that Gray was not adoptable yet.

Overcoming resentment and aloofness

While Gray’s state had improved in several respects he now took to inside the house.

The shell-shocked look had disappeared, but M. found that he looked somewhat ill-tempered. M. did get him neutered and I wondered whether this would have any effect, positive or negative.

With animal clients the essences are selected more or less the same way as with humans. One looks at the life history of the animal, its temperament, behavioural patterns etc. Everything is the same (except that the consultation is done with the pet owner....) When M. and I explored Gray’s temperament a bit, we discovered that he did not seem to have a sense of gratefulness in him. He did not seem particularly appreciative for what he was given and for the fact that he was taken care of. M said: “It is almost as if he had a chip on his shoulder.”

So, when did he pee? It seemed to happen when M. did not play with him. And once he peed when his supper wasn’t ready on time. There was a sense of entitlement about him,Gray on his own of being served what he deserved!

  1. also felt there was some resentment in him. So, he was quite demanding in his own way!

Second essence blend

I changed the formula completely and made a blend of: Willow for resentment, Holly to be more loving, Chicory because he demanded attention, Oregon Grape for expecting bad things from people around him, Rock Rose and Mimulus to keep working on the fears, Poison Oak because he was so unapproachable., and Chestnut Bud to help learn and change this new habit.

Water Violet (Hottonia palustris)

 I also added Water Violet,

the cat type remedy because of his aloofness and arrogance. As every cat owner knows, cats will come to you when they so choose.

No more peeing inside the house

The peeing inside the house stopped soon, an improvement any cat owner will appreciate!

After a few weeks, another dramatic change happened. M. went away for a week and her husband took care of the cat.

When she came back – he (the cat) purred! She let him into the house – and he allowed full hands-on petting! Even his face looked totally different, according to M. This changed lasted, and now he actually is asking to be petted.

Gray has indeed come around.

For those readers who find it strange that essence can be sprayed and still work: essences don’t work through chemical pathways. They affect the mind-body connection and the energy pathways that correspond to our physical configuration. Have you ever entered a room which had a bad atmosphere? This atmosphere can change almost instantly when spraying essences. And since animals are more sensitive to atmosphere and energy than most people, they respond easily. No placebo effect here, since the essences were never sprayed when the cats were around!

Gray

 Sequel, March 2016:

M. came to see me to give me another update. She said that by this time, no noises whatsoever bothered Gray. “It is amanzing how he justs to be patted and wants to come into the house. And he is purring so loudly! I can pick him up and twist him around and he still feels safe. “

Gray has no more chip on his shoulder whatsoever.

This really shows that trauma in an animal can be FULLY healed. Gray turned around by 180 degrees from what he used to be like. Not only did the trauma heal, his character evolved too.

Through the combination of human care and flower essences, both healing and inner development are possible for animals. What a reason to be optimistic about the future!
